Starbucks recently announced that will be issuing a product recall of approximately 2.5 million straws due to risk of serious injury to consumers.
The recall affects stainless steel straws that are sold along with stainless steel cups at Starbucks’ locations throughout the United States, including New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The straws come in packages of three.
According to a Starbucks company representative, the stainless steel straws “are rigid” and pose a significant health risk to customers who use them. The U.S. Consumers Product Safety Commission (CPSC) confirmed the safety risks in a statement and highlighted reports of at least three children suffering mouth lacerations as a result of using the Starbucks steel straws.
Starbucks officials also noted that a fourth child, who lives in Canada, sustained personal injuries due to use of the company’s steel straw. That’s why Starbucks is also recalling more than 300,000 stainless steel straws sold in Canada. The Canadian recall notice provided more specifics about exactly how the straws can cause injuries, stating that the straws “may pose an injury hazard for young children using them while simultaneously engaged in activities, such as running or jumping.”
An official statement by Starbucks asked customers to return any stainless steel straws they have purchased. Moreover, the statement indicated that consumers “should not allow children to handle or use the stainless steel straws.” Anyone who has purchased the Starbucks straws should return them to a retail location, where the recalled straws can be exchanged for safer plastic straws.
