Samsung, which is already facing a major consumer backlash for selling defective smartphones, could be in store for more public relations difficulties after it was revealed that federal safety officials are investigating the company’s washing machines for possible product defects. A recent report indicates that Samsung’s top-loading washing machines may have “safety issues” that result in explosions.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that it is currently investigating a particular model of Samsung washing machines. Although the CPSC has not specified the exactly model that could be putting consumers at risk of injury, it did state that the potentially defective washing machines were manufactured between March 2011 and April 2016.
For the past year, Samsung has reportedly been engaged in what have been described as “active discussions” with federal safety officials as the company looked into the possible product defect and tried to determine what exactly what causing the explosions. Thus far, the only statement issued by either Samsung or the CPSC on the matter warns consumers to use a lower spin speed in the delicate cycle in order to reduce the risk of an explosion. According to the company, there have not been any reports of explosions when the washing machines are operated in this cycle.
However, just a few months ago, several consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Samsung in connection with washing machines that allegedly exploded during use. The exploding washing machines reportedly caused “significant damage” in at least two instances.
