The Kellogg Co. has issued a major food product recall of Eggo Waffles because the breakfast items may be contaminated with listeria.
The waffle recall was deemed necessary when a worker conducting routine testing at a Kellogg manufacturing facility noticed a problem with the way in which machinery was being cleaned. According to the Kellogg Company, it was possible that a particular batch of Eggo Waffles may have been contaminated with the listeria bacteria due to “a gap in the sanitation process.”
The Eggo Waffle recall comes on the heels of another high-profile recall of Blue Bell ice cream. There have been a number of media headlines in recent weeks highlighting the concerns about listeria contamination.
The Kellogg Company recall only affects one specific brand of Eggo Waffles: the Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat waffles. Approximately 10,000 cases of the Eggo whole wheat waffles have been recalled. This means that anyone who has purchased a package of the recalled waffles should immediately discard them or return them to the store for a full refund. Under no circumstances should anyone eat the waffles.
The recalled waffles have reportedly been shipped to grocery stores and other retailers in 25 different states, including New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.
Although there have not yet been any confirmed reports of listeria infections caused by consumption of the recalled Eggo Waffles, Kellogg’s officials made the decision to be proactive and issue the recall before receiving any such reports.
Listeria can cause significant infections that can sometimes lead to death. The groups of people most likely to be adversely affected by a listeria contamination include young children, elderly people, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Even an otherwise healthy person exposed to listeria can potentially suffer catastrophic health consequences, including severe headaches, severe abdominal pain, fever, and nausea.
The recall was issued voluntarily, which means that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet ordered Kellogg’s to recall the waffles. However, it remains possible that the federal government could at some point decide to make the food recall mandatory.
