Drunk driving is one of the most common causes of accidents in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that drunk driving crashes claim about 28 lives nationwide every day.
When you spot a driver who is behaving erratically, swerving, rapidly changing speeds, ignoring traffic signals, or otherwise seems incapable of operating the vehicle safely, it’s important to act—for your own safety and the safety of others on the road. Here’s what to do:
1. Get out of the “danger zone,” if you can.
Pulling over, slowing down, or moving behind the suspected drunk driver’s vehicle can help you avoid being hit by the erratic driver. Do not try to stop the driver or get their attention, as this may cause them to crash.
2. Make note of as many details about the car and location as you can.
Pay attention to the car’s make, model and color. Get the license plate number if you can. Also, make note of the location of the vehicle, including the street you are on and the last or next intersection. And note how the driver was acting. What made you suspect drunk driving: was the car swerving? Driving in the opposing traffic lane? Speeding up and then braking suddenly? Did you see the driver with a bottle or can?
3. Call 911.
Call 911 as soon as you can. Tell the dispatcher you’d like to report a drunk driver. Give the details about the vehicle, its location, and the details about the dangerous actions you saw. If you are hit by a drunk driver, a call to 911 should be one of the first steps you take as well.
