An accident can happen anywhere, and at anytime. Fatal accidents happen on both larger roadways and residential roads, but tend to happen more frequently on highways when fast speeds and other factors come into play. While it’s important to always take caution whenever you’re driving, the following are some of the deadliest highways in New Jersey according to past accident statistics, and where it’s important to be extra careful:
New Jersey Turnpike
In 2014, the New Jersey Turnpike was named the deadliest highway in the entire state. This could be due to the fact that it’s also one of the busiest roadways in the whole country. It stretches 122 miles throughout the state, with its northern end just outside of the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee. Aside from New York, it also provides easy access to Pennsylvania and Delaware.
Garden State Parkway
This is one of the state’s biggest highways, which is over 172 miles and can take motorists through the entire state, all the way to the New York state line. It’s also less commonly known as Route 444, or the simply “the Parkway.” It has been around since 1947, and due to its age and amount of traffic on a daily basis, it’s no surprise that it remains one of New Jersey’s top three deadliest highways.
Route 9
Route 9 stretches across three states, which are New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. There is also a short overlap with US 1. Although Route 9 is not quite as dangerous as the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, it has still been considered one of the top three most dangerous highways in New Jersey due the amount of fatal accidents that occur.
It may be difficult, or even impossible, to avoid some of these dangerous highways in the state of New Jersey. If you don’t have alternative routes available, always be sure to take extra precautions and avoid traveling in poor weather conditions, if possible.
