Bicycle Safety Tips
Riding a bicycle is a great way for you to exercise. It’s also a great way to beat the commute when going to or from work. You don’t have to sit in a long line of traffic or fight with other drivers to let you merge. Bicyclists must still follow the rules of the road and stop at all stop signs and red lights. They must also wait to make left turns until they have an arrow or there are no vehicles traveling towards them. If you enjoy riding your bike in South Jersey it’s important to follow the bicycle safety tips outlined below.
- Always wear a helmet and other protective gear
- Wear clothing appropriate for the weather
- Wear a reflective vest, clothing with reflective striping, or bright-colored clothes
- Always wear proper shoes (no slide-on shoes, open-toed sandals, or flip-flops)
- Install a flashing headlight for riding in the dark and a flashing red light on the rear of the bike
- Obey all traffic laws. Bicyclists must follow the laws governing vehicle travel
- Avoid riding in the dark as much as possible
- Do not use your mobile phone while riding
- Avoid listening to music via headphones while riding
- Remain alert at all times
- Yield to vehicular traffic when appropriate
- Operate your bike in a predictable manner
- Become a defensive rider
- Always be on the lookout for hazards, kids, and animals
- Be wary of parked cars and doors flying open
- Look twice before turning left or right
- Yield to pedestrians just like vehicles must yield
- Avoid riding on the sidewalk
- Adjust the bicycle to fit your body
- Check the bicycle for issues prior to every ride
Steps to Take if Involved in a Bicycle Accident
If you ever find yourself involved in a bicycle accident, no matter how severe, you need to call 911 immediately so the police and other emergency personnel respond. The police will take your statement and create a report about the accident. You should then accept medical evaluation by responding EMTs or firefighters. If they recommend that you go to the hospital, accept transport so you can be evaluated with more in-depth tests for any injuries.
If you have time, take pictures of the accident scene. This includes pictures of your injuries, the bicycle, the other vehicles involved, the road conditions, the traffic lights, traffic signs and anything else you deem appropriate. Speak with witnesses and exchange information with them so you can have your personal injury attorney contact them.
Never speak with an insurance company – whether it’s your own or the company for the driver involved – until you speak with an attorney. The insurance company will attempt to get you to accept a settlement. Speaking with an attorney will help you understand your rights and what legal actions you should take.
