A serious car accident in Kearny New Jersey left one person with physical injuries and caused significant property damage.
The multi-vehicle crash occurred on Kearny Avenue in Kearny, NJ. An 82-year-old Newark man was driving a 2006 Nissan Altima south on the roadway. When the motorist approached a traffic light at the intersection of Kearny Avenue and Johnson Street, he reportedly accelerated and crashed into a Toyota Camry. The driver of the Camry, a 54-year-old Edison NJ woman, slowed down as the traffic light changed from green to yellow and then to red, according to law enforcement.
The accident damaged both vehicles and caused a light pole and the traffic signal to fall to the ground, with the Nissan hitting the Camry and subsequently crashing into the light pole, the traffic signal, a control box, and a trash can. The Nissan eventually came to a complete stop after the vehicle slammed into a tree just off the roadway.
Kearny NJ police officers were dispatched to the scene, where they surveyed the aftermath of the motor vehicle accident. There was shattered glass and debris all over the road. Additionally, the downed traffic light was on the pavement and in the middle of the street.
Kearny cops spoke with both drivers, as well as witnesses. The driver of the Nissan told police that he accidentally hit the accelerator instead of braking. However, other motorists who witnessed the car accident said that the driver of the Nissan actually tried to pass the Camry and avoid the red light in front of him.
After the accident, emergency medical responders transported the Edison NJ woman who was driving the Camry to a local hospital so that she could be treated for her accident-related injuries. Her status remained unknown, with hospital officials declining to provide a medical update.
Meanwhile, the elderly driver of the Nissan was cited for multiple traffic violations, including reckless driving and failure to obey a traffic signal.
