Popular sportscaster Erin Andrews finally resolved her civil lawsuit against a major hotel in connection with a stalking case that drew national attention.
Andrews reached a settlement with the Nashville Marriott at Vanderbilt University, with the hotel agreeing to pay her an undisclosed sum in the wake of a massive jury award of $55 million.
Andrews, who worked for ESPN at the time of the stalking incident and who has since been a host on “Dancing with the Stars,” gained unwanted notoriety in 2008 after nude videos of her were posted on the Internet.
It soon became clear that the nude footage had been taken without Andrews’ consent. Law enforcement investigated and eventually determined that David Barrett had secretly shot the nude videos of Andrews by accessing a peephole in her hotel room and using his cellphone to record her as she undressed.
Earlier this year, a jury awarded $55 million to Andrews, with Andrews’ stalker being responsible for roughly half of the total damages.
Additionally, the hotel owner was found to be negligent in the case. As a result of this negligence, said the jury, Barrett was able to gain access to Andrews’ room and violate her privacy. According to authorities, Barrett found out where Andrews was staying by asking hotel staff. He then arranged to stay in an adjoining room.
After reaching the settlement with the hotel, Andrews’ attorney issued a statement in which he said that the litigation in the high-profile case is now finished. Moreover, the lawyer praised Andrews for being “courageous” throughout the litigation and remaining steadfast in her refusal to let any of the liable parties off the hook.
