Conviction for Fatal Distracted Driving Accident
You’ve always heard it since you were a child – look both ways before crossing the street. Always use the crosswalk and be vigilant while walking or biking along the road.
It’s wise advice, but no amount of advice can protect you from a distracted driver who isn’t even paying attention to the road. If a driver’s eyes are on their phone, then they’re traveling significant distances without knowing where they’re going. This often leads to tragedy for pedestrians who are struck. A recent criminal case in New Jersey is spreading awareness about the dangerous trend. Learn what happened to one texting driver below.
Justice for Pedestrians
Pedestrians who get hit by moving cars are usually injured. In the worst cases, pedestrians can be killed by reckless drivers. This month, a New Jersey courtroom achieved a conviction that’s helping spread public awareness about texting and driving.
According to the court case, a pedestrian was walking across the street at a crosswalk. Witnesses confirmed that the pedestrian wasn’t jaywalking and was walking while the light was red. Suddenly, a car jolted forward and slammed into the pedestrian. The injured victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment, but she did not survive.
Police immediately began investigating what caused the collision. According to the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian, his car was jolted forward due to the car behind him smashing into his rear. That’s when police began questioning Alexandra Mansonet, the driver of the second vehicle. Over the course of the investigation, it became clear that the pedestrian’s injuries resulted from a classic texting and driving case.
The driver claims they were distracted by a text message, but they weren’t actively texting. A judge and jury decided that the driver’s actions were reckless and amounted to vehicular homicide. Now, Mansonet faces up to ten years in jail.
